After four years of zero international travel, three of those years through a pandemic, Iʻve finally booked my next trip to my next Pacific Island nation, PALAU.

Disclaimer: I totally went to Belize twice to see family.

After all these years, I will finally be taking off on my first solo trip abroad and my got what a refresher.

But WAIT, out of all places in the world, WHY PALAU?

The Perfect “One Off” Trip from Hawaii

Unless you live in the Phillippines, Guam, Japan, or South Korea, Palauʻs location is undeniably….FAR. Meaning, it is very expensive to get to. But while that is not the prime reason I am going, Palau just does not have multiple routes to transit onward to. Regardless of layover, you come in from Guam and leave back to Guam, with the exception of a once a week flight nonstop to and from Manila.

My Addiction to multidestination travel

Typically, I like to visit a destination and research how I can take advantage of the surrounding nations or cities. This is a great way to maximize your time in a general area of the world. Palau, isnʻt very ideal for that as it doesnʻt offer onward flights to Micronesia or Papua New Guinea for example. Unless I plan to go onward to the Phillippines, Palau for now is perfect for a couple of weeks and change.

Relics of War

The Pacific Theatre of World War 2 stretched from South Asia to the Central Pacific and Iʻve had the honor and priviledge of visiting some war relics left behind on Nauru, Kiribati, Tuvalu, and the Marshall Islands. Palau was one of numerous locations under Japanese control during the war with Peleliu being location for one of those battles. Left behind, are gun placement, turrets, tanks, bullets, and many other small relics. The government has protected these sites for visitors issuing permits to have the opportunity to see a place stuck back in a dark time.

A Unique Taste of the Pacific Islands

I love and enjoying visiting new destinations each trip, but in short…I LOVE THE PACIFIC ISLANDS & Palau will offer a unique Pacific Island experience. Despite itʻs remote location to the south east of the Phillippines, it is very much linguistically connected to Micronesia, one of three designatied regions of the vast Pacific Islands.

My 2018 Pacific island trip changed my life and my purpose as a traveler having taken a deep plunge into the raw unique and beautiful culture of these people scattered across the Pacific. The kind people, the food, the music, the dance, the languages, & the hospitality are all reasons why I have stuck around in this region of the world all of these years. And while Palau is a one off trip into a place Iʻve never experienced before, itʻs definitely a great addition into my well verse Pacific adventures.
